The Principal’s Corner As you enter Berkley Street School you will be surrounded by the sounds and sights of a school that is truly child-centered. Classrooms reflect the excitement and vitality of both the students and their teachers as they prepare for a new school year. Our children benefit from a school community that is united in its vision to work in the best interests of its students. Successful learning is achieved through the commitment of outstanding teachers who are dedicated to creating positive, nurturing, and academically challenging experiences for children. Parental support is fundamental and considered an integral part of a child’s learning experience. Our comprehensive curriculum encourages integrated lessons and a discovery-based methodology. Our language arts program focuses on a balanced literacy approach. Students are immersed in a literature-based program that includes phonics, shared, guided, and independent reading, as well as a Writer’s Workshop approach that allows students to develop their skills as readers and writers. Celebrations are planned to allow our young authors to share their writing with families. Our mathematics program is a high interest, hands-on, inquiry based approach that encourages students to apply learned concepts to real life situations. The Every Day Math program will be implemented in second grade this year. Kindergarten and first grade children began instruction in the Every Day Math program last year. Older students will develop strategies in problem solving using math journals and the Singapore Math approach. Special subject teachers provide instruction in art, music, Spanish, and technology / library on a weekly basis. Physical education is taught twice a week, and our Enrichment teacher presents grade level lessons throughout the year. Special area instruction is available for students in Basic Skills, Speech, English as a Second Language, Gifted and Talented, as well as Resource Centers and Multiple Disabled classes for students with special needs. A guidance counselor is available to support student’s social and emotional needs. Our nurse is on hand to support the health needs of our students. We are fortunate to have a Computer Lab that allows our students to use technology as an extension into all areas of the curriculum. Students and teachers have access to on-line services for research, formal lessons, and to collect information for classroom projects. The acquisition of several new Smart Boards allows teachers to facilitate interactive lessons and enhance instruction and learning. The staff at Berkley School fosters a caring, positive learning environment. The characteristics of good citizenship are promoted and encouraged daily. Through our monthly Good Citizen program, students are recognized for their efforts to display qualities that show a respect for self and others. Our Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) is an active group that provides many worthwhile programs and events which directly benefit our students. Through their fundraising efforts, they are able to sponsor programs and assemblies, an author visit, book fairs, field trips, and many other events designed to enhance academic and cultural programs in our school. Their monthly meetings are posted on our calendar and they welcome your participation. I thank them for their support and contributions to our school. I am pleased to welcome you to our school, and look forward to an exciting year.
