 Gibbs Music Program

WELCOME TO INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC CLASS!!!

Dear Students, Parents/Guardians,

Hello! My name is Mrs.Berenshtein and I am going to be your instrumental music teacher this year at Gibbs Elementary School. I am very happy that you have signed up or that you are planning to sign up for an instrumental music program. I am looking forward to beginning this musical adventure with you!

Learning any instrument means that you will become a musician. I’ve been a musician for a long time and for me, there is nothing better than making music on my own or with other people. You can play in a symphony, a band, you can play duets with just two people, or you can play solo music on your own. You will be able to express yourself through your instrument, without saying a word!  The music world is a very exciting place and you can start being a musician today!

You first instrumental music lesson will start in September. I invite you to attend your first lesson on:

Strings – Wednesday September 7th, 2011 at 7pm in music room.

It will be demonstration lesson for parents and children together. All instruments must be rented before September. Students must bring their instruments to music room first day of school.

Band – Wednesday September 14th, 2011 during school hours. All instruments and accessories must be purchased before September. Please, bring your instrument, all accessories and a book for your instrument.

Below you will find a list of all materials and accessories needed for next year. Please make sure to bring them along with your instrument on the first day of school.

Performing Ensembles at GIBBS School

Beginning Strings/Band

Membership is open to any student entering the Fourth Grade and to Fifth Grade students who wish to commence the study of a band/strings instrument.

Advance Strings/Band

Advanced Band is available for those students who have previous instrumental experience.   The Advanced students will perform at the Winter and Spring concerts.

All groups will perform at the Winter and Spring concerts.  The music chosen will represent different styles and periods of music while remaining age appropriate and suitable for the elementary instrumental student.

Weekly Lessons

Students will attend weekly small group lessons scheduled on a rotating basis during the regular school day. An effort will be made to ensure that students do not miss a disproportionate amount of class time in any given subject.  Classroom activities will include study in a standard published instrumental method, small ensemble work, and preparation of Beginning and Concert literature. Solo material may be provided for enrichment.

Lesson Schedules

Printed lesson schedules are distributed to each student.  A copy of the schedule is posted in each classroom and in the music room.

Make-ups for Missed Lessons

In the event that a student misses a lesson due to absence, a scheduled classroom activity that requires their attendance or through forgetfulness, a make-up lesson is sometimes available on Monday of the week.  During weeks when there are less than five school days or during weeks when there may be assemblies or testing in school, Friday make-up lessons may not be available.

Students who need to use the make-up lessons should see Mrs. Berenshtein as soon as possible after their missed lesson period.

Maintenance Hints for Band Instruments

Buying Reeds

Reeds for clarinets and saxophones wear out.  If properly cared for, reeds should last about three weeks.  Students should have a spare reed available in their case.  If you buy reeds at a music store, please tell the clerk that you need “2” strength.  Stores often want to sell you “1 1/2” strength reeds.  Do not accept them as I only recommend them for the first several weeks.  There are several brands available.  Most stores stock Rico, a good brand for young musicians.

Valve or Slide Oil

Brass instrument valves and trombone slides should be oiled each day that the instrument is played.  Replacement oil is available at all music stores, and I usually have spares at school.  Tuning slides should be greased every 90 days.  Do not use oil.  There is special tuning slide grease that is available but Vaseline or similar petroleum jellies works fine.

Greasing Corks

Clarinet corks, saxophone necks, etc. need to be greased with the cork grease that comes with the instrument.  Use the grease only when the instrument is difficult to put together.  Over greasing will soften the corks and may require replacement.

Gibbs General Music Program

As winter approaches, students are hard at work in music class learning new songs, musical terms and concepts. Kindergarteners have been experimenting with all different ways to move their bodies to music and will soon be practicing how to make a steady beat with instruments. First graders are using their voices to create different sounds and will be learning how to describe the differences between a speaking voice and a singing voice. Second graders, who are already pros at creating a steady beat, are studying the melodies of different songs and identifying song form. In third grade, we have finally started our highly-anticipated recorder playing! Students have learned two notes so far and will soon be adding a third and starting to practice new songs. It's going to be a fun winter for all!
