Performing Ensembles at GIBBS School Beginning Strings/Band Membership is open to any student entering the Fourth Grade and to Fifth Grade students who wish to commence the study of a band/strings instrument. Advance Strings/Band Advanced Band is available for those students who have previous instrumental experience. The Advanced students will perform at the Winter and Spring concerts.
All groups will perform at the Winter and Spring concerts. The music chosen will represent different styles and periods of music while remaining age appropriate and suitable for the elementary instrumental student.
Maintenance Hints for Band Instruments Buying Reeds Reeds for clarinets and saxophones wear out. If properly cared for, reeds should last about three weeks. Students should have a spare reed available in their case. If you buy reeds at a music store, please tell the clerk that you need 2 strength. Stores often want to sell you 1 1/2 strength reeds. Do not accept them as I only recommend them for the first several weeks. There are several brands available. Most stores stock Rico, a good brand for young musicians. Valve or Slide Oil Brass instrument valves and trombone slides should be oiled each day that the instrument is played. Replacement oil is available at all music stores, and I usually have spares at school. Tuning slides should be greased every 90 days. Do not use oil. There is special tuning slide grease that is available but Vaseline or similar petroleum jellies works fine. Greasing Corks Clarinet corks, saxophone necks, etc. need to be greased with the cork grease that comes with the instrument. Use the grease only when the instrument is difficult to put together. Over greasing will soften the corks and may require replacement.
