WELCOME TO INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC CLASS!!!

K - 2 Music with Ms. Lewis

Kindergartners are busy learning about all the different ways we can
use our voices, including speaking, singing, shouting and whispering.  They have practiced using both loud and soft singing voices, as well as high and low singing voices and will soon be discovering more about how to create a song with their voices.

First graders have been working hard to identify different patterns of
high and low and short and long in music. They are currently working
on a project that will illustrate what they have learned about high
and low voices.

Second graders kicked off the year practicing making steady beats todifferent songs. They have been using their bodies to create differentsounds to go with their songs and have now mastered the differencebetween the beat of music and the rhythm of music. Next they will begin learning to identify symbols in music notation.

3 - 5 Music with Mr. Andolino

Music 3 handles basic musicianship, vocalizing, music notation and recorders. Hand eye coordination with some percussion instruments are introduced.

Music 4 includes vocal music and some interactive small musicals, reading music in sections and identifying individual parts.

Music 5 is more advanced vocal music with emphasis on concert performance. Students learn to apply what they hear to current repertoire in vocal form.

Performing Ensembles at GIBBS School

Beginning Strings/Band

Membership is open to any student entering the Fourth Grade and to Fifth Grade students who wish to commence the study of a band/strings instrument.

Advance Strings/Band

Advanced Band is available for those students who have previous instrumental experience.   The Advanced students will perform at the Winter and Spring concerts.

All groups will perform at the Winter and Spring concerts.  The music chosen will represent different styles and periods of music while remaining age appropriate and suitable for the elementary instrumental student.

Maintenance Hints for Band Instruments

Buying Reeds

Reeds for clarinets and saxophones wear out.  If properly cared for, reeds should last about three weeks.  Students should have a spare reed available in their case.  If you buy reeds at a music store, please tell the clerk that you need “2” strength.  Stores often want to sell you “1 1/2” strength reeds.  Do not accept them as I only recommend them for the first several weeks.  There are several brands available.  Most stores stock Rico, a good brand for young musicians.

Valve or Slide Oil

Brass instrument valves and trombone slides should be oiled each day that the instrument is played.  Replacement oil is available at all music stores, and I usually have spares at school.  Tuning slides should be greased every 90 days.  Do not use oil.  There is special tuning slide grease that is available but Vaseline or similar petroleum jellies works fine.

Greasing Corks

Clarinet corks, saxophone necks, etc. need to be greased with the cork grease that comes with the instrument.  Use the grease only when the instrument is difficult to put together.  Over greasing will soften the corks and may require replacement.
