Since depression often results in a decline in academics, decrease in participation, mood swings, increase need for immediate gratification, difficulty completing tasks, lost of interest in extra curricular activities and poor socialization, schools often notice changes and observe all of these symptoms first.  ( Lamartine, 2005)

The suicidal rate in teenagers has quadrupled in the last quarter century making it the 3rd leading cause of adolescent death in the nation.  According to ( Kahn, 2005), a  high school with a population of 2,000 students can expect 50 attempted suicides per year. Adolescent mental health issues that correlate with low self esteem and poor sense of self worth include depression, unsafe sex, criminal activity and substance abuse.  ( New Model, 1995)

In the United  States alone, major depression will affect one in fifty school children nation wide.  Countless others are affected by milder cases of depression which may also affect school performance and family relationships.  ( Lamartine, 2005)
