Deborah Gitto received a B.A. in Psychology from Rutgers, The State University, in New Jersey, as well as a Graduate Certificate of Advanced Study in Elementary Education from Saint Thomas Aquinas College in New York. She currently teaches 2nd grade at Berkley Street School. Debbie Gitto also previously taught 3rd grade at Berkley for nearly 10 years from 1995 to 2005. During that time, she served as a Key-Note Speaker at the COSAC 16th Annual Conference where she collaboration with the Alpine Learning Group to lecture on the role of the classroom teacher in the education of students with Autism. After 2005, Debbie remained connected to New Milford Public Schools as a substitute teacher in grades K-7, and briefly as a 5th grade Maternity Leave Replacement in the years she spent raising her two children. During that time, she also served as one of two Service Unit Managers for Emerson Girl Scouts, where she was instrumental in organizing, orchestrating, and maintaining the town-wide Girl Scout Program, which also earned her a regional “Rookie of the Year” Award.
Mrs. Gitto’s return to her teaching career at Berkley Street School has been both rewarding and inspiring. Her classroom library includes a wide variety of book collections that span many levels of reading. Colorful and organized books bins invite students to develop their love of reading. In math, she incorporates a concrete, hands-on approach to instruction based on methods learned for 2nd and 3rd grade at Conquer Math.
Mrs. Gitto’s classroom is a vibrant environment where students are valued, nurtured, and encouraged daily to reach their full potential. She fosters an atmosphere where learning is student-centered and student-driven as children explore and discover that learning is exciting. Kindness is a daily focus & expectation. Debbie Gitto takes pride in being a teacher of the New Milford School District and even runs the annual 10Ks for the NMEF each year! She looks forward to a continued career at Berkley Street School where she first began teaching in 1995.
